204 – What Two Little Girls Taught Me About Slowing Down and Noticing

Sometimes the most ordinary moments with young children are the ones that reveal the most.

When we slow down enough to simply watch, we can begin to notice their growing independence, their individual personalities and the little discoveries that matter so much to them.

In this episode, Helen shares how a simple walk in the garden with two little girls became a reminder of just how much we can discover when we stop, slow down and simply notice.

When you first become a mum, it can sometimes feel as though there is always something you should be doing.

There are feeds to think about, nappies to change, sleep to navigate and routines to establish. As your baby grows, there are new milestones to watch for and new stages to understand. With so much happening, it can be surprisingly easy to become focused on what comes next rather than noticing what is happening right in front of you.

Recently, I was reminded just how much we can discover when we allow ourselves to slow down.

I was outside in the garden with the two little girls I care for, who are twins. What began as a very ordinary walk became one of those experiences that stays with you.

There was no particular destination and nothing I was trying to teach them. I simply followed along as they explored.

And because I wasn’t rushing them towards the next activity, I found myself noticing so much more.

I watched their curiosity as seemingly insignificant things caught their attention. I noticed their growing confidence and independence. Perhaps most fascinating of all was seeing their individual personalities becoming increasingly apparent.

Here were two little girls of the same age, experiencing the same surroundings at the same time, yet responding to their world in their own individual ways.

It made me think about how easy it is for us as adults to overlook these moments.

Young children don’t experience the world with our sense of urgency. Something we might walk past without a second thought can become a fascinating discovery to them. They have an extraordinary ability to be completely absorbed by what is happening now.

And perhaps there is something we can learn from that.

If you’ve recently had a baby and are at the beginning of your parenting journey, you may already feel surrounded by advice about what you should be doing and when your child should be doing it.

But sometimes you don’t need to do anything.

Sometimes you can simply observe.

In this episode of First Time Mum’s Chat, I share what happened during that walk with the twins and why such a simple experience made such an impression on me.

It’s an invitation to take some of the pressure off yourself, slow things down occasionally and become curious about the little person developing in front of you.

Because the ordinary moments you’re experiencing today may eventually become some of the ones you remember most.

So, when you have a quiet moment, press play and join me. Perhaps it will encourage you to notice something about your own little one that you hadn’t quite seen before.
