🌀Why Baby Walkers Might Be Slowing Your Baby Down — And What You Can Do Instead
As a new mum, it’s completely natural to want to support your baby’s development in every way possible. And when you see products like the baby walker, jumpers, and exersaucers promising to help your baby learn to stand or walk faster, it’s easy to think, “This must be good for them.”
But what if these popular devices are actually working against your baby’s natural development?
In this episode of First Time Mum’s Chat, I’m diving into a topic that often surprises parents: how a baby walker and similar upright devices affect a baby’s muscles, hips, posture, balance, and milestones. Drawing from more than 20 years supporting babies and young children — and inspired by my recent work with two gorgeous six-month-old twins — I share what many mums aren’t told about the positions these devices place babies in before their bodies are truly ready.
Why Baby Walkers Aren’t Helping the Way You Think
Although a baby walker gives the impression of teaching your baby to walk, the truth is very different. These devices allow babies to move much faster than their current reflexes and coordination can safely manage. They also give access to objects and hazards they shouldn’t normally reach.
But perhaps even more importantly, placing a baby upright before they’ve built the essential foundation skills — rolling, pushing up, crawling, pulling to stand — can actually delay walking rather than encourage it. Babies need time on the floor to explore and strengthen their whole body naturally. A baby walker skips these crucial steps.
What I See in Real Homes
Over the years, I’ve walked into many homes where babies adore bouncing in a jumper or gliding around in a baby walker. And while they often look delighted, their bodies tell a different story: leaning forward, locking knees, bouncing from toes, arching through the back, or tiring quickly.
I’ve seen this again recently while working with twins. Even though their parents use devices only in moderation, their little bodies still compensated in ways that show they simply aren’t developmentally ready for those positions. This inspired me to bring you an honest and supportive explanation in this episode.
Gentle Alternatives That Truly Support Your Baby
The good news? You don’t need expensive equipment to help your baby thrive. Simple movements — tummy time, rolling, floor play, wriggling, reaching, and exploring — are the real building blocks of strong, confident movement.
This episode will help you understand how to support your baby’s natural development without relying on devices that could unintentionally hold them back.
If you’re a new mum wanting clarity, reassurance, and practical guidance you can trust, this episode will give you the confidence to make informed choices that feel right for both you and your baby.
